Two Big Issues by Bill Gates
Written by Raymond Tay on February 17, 2009 – 8:38 am -Should everyone strive for abundance? Increasing wealth?
My personal belief is “YES“. In the world, most of those people who are leading the frontier, creating value and contributing back to the society are the successful and wealthy individuals. If all of us can achieve abundance, I think the world will be a better place. From the movie,” The Secret”, it emphasized an important point: “There is enough for everyone.” Fortunately, each of us want & do different things.
Bill Gates is the real-life example. After becoming the richest man in the world, he does not just sit back and relax but working hard to solve the world’s issues. In his speech in TED, he spoke about two big issues: Malaria and Education. Indeed, that disease is killing many lives around the world (esp. the poorer countries). We should be grateful that we live in a developing/developed country.
I will be sharing my views more on education as I felt more connected and seeing myself as an Educator & Teacher. Bill asked this qn: “How do you make a teacher great?” There is no easy answer to this. For me, I think any great teacher will possess the passion to share and the commitment to excellence (always look for ways to improve). He mentioned KIPP: Houston High School as one of the role models to make a great teacher. I have visited their website and noticed these powerful values that they shared:
- Knowledge is Power!
- All of us WILL learn.
- Be nice. Work hard.
- There are no shortcuts.
- We are not successful because of who we are; we are successful because of what we do.
- Actions speak louder than words.
- Be the change you wish to see in the world. (following the quote by Gandhi)
The teachers in KIPP Houston use clear & quantifiable measures (Norm-referenced Test and State Criterion-Referenced Test) to compare & monitor the student progress. Most importantly, they are dynamic in their teaching and full of energy. Always ensuring each and everyone of the students is paying attention. With Today’s technology, Bill highlighted that we can make use of digital camera to capture the lessons and pinpoint what the teachers have done well and what they can improve or deal with a more effective manner.
